We are sometimes asked to complete forms enabling individuals to participate in a sporting event or activity. Sadly, we are no longer able to complete these forms. The reason for this relates to this story which has recently been in the press.
If you were to be seriously injured in this event, the partners would face unlimited vicarious liability which would cause us to be personally bankrupted, and the practice to close. I’m sure that you can appreciate that we cannot take that risk. We hope that this situation will be rectified by changes that will have to happen nationally with the medical indemnity providers.
Exercise and organised sport are an extremely important part of promoting good physical and mental health. We want to support our patients in their wish to do the activities that they love, but cannot do so within the current medicolegal environment.
This policy has been agreed and adopted by all GPs at Berkeley Place Surgery.
